The Story
The year is 2299 and all of mankind lives in a society where the indefinite extension of human life is possible. In order to keep the population under control, a panel of magistrates determines if people are useful enough to continue to have their lives extended and to remain living on the mainland, or if they are to be expelled to the colonies where they will live out the course of their natural lives. Those who are granted a Life Extension Procedure (L.E.P.) are known as LEPers.
The story follows the lives of Magistrate Richard Cory, one of three mainland magistrates; Emily Harrison (his ex-wife with whom he is still in love), a scientist who is expelled to the colonies for research that might threaten mainland security; Paul, a young, precocious student whose questioning of the system after his father is banished to the colonies lands him in the Center for Maladjustment Correction; Francine Lerner, the teacher who sent him there under threat of expulsion to the colonies and then fights for his return; and Magistrate Charon, who plays the system to his financial advantage, letting the Center for Population Control determine whom he should expel to the colonies or not.
Will Cory be able to regain Emily's love once she has been banished to the colonies? What new life will Emily discover waiting for her there? Will Paul be brain-washed by the CMC or manage to escape? And what will happen when a famous mass-murderer comes up for a life extension trial, claiming that his murders are societally useful by helping to control the population?
